Leveraging your Twitter CV: Bio + Pinned Tweet

Why your bio and pinned tweet are key elements to converting potential followers

GM! I just returned from NFC Lisbon, where I spoke on a panel on “OGs versus Degens” and who adds more value to the space. Both mindsets have value to them: The degen who likes exploring new trends, technologies, and features and the OG who has established themself in this space.

Building a recognizable brand

That translates to your brand as well. While you want to experiment with new Twitter features, storytelling techniques, and so on, at the same time, it is tremendously important to build a visually recognizable brand and get people to stop scrolling when they see and recognize you on their timeline.

A strong brand will increase your engagement with existing followers and also make people who see your content for the first time curious to learn more about you.

Their next step? A click on your profile, where they will see your bio and your pinned tweet. These two critical elements of your Twitter presence hold immense power to translate your profile visits into actual followers.

Why Your Bio and Pinned Tweet Matter

Your Twitter bio is the first thing a potential follower will read about you. It's your elevator pitch, a chance to tell your story, mission, or unique perspective succinctly.

Your pinned tweet, on the other hand, serves as an extension of this pitch – it gives your potential followers a flavor of what to expect from your feed.

Crafting a Compelling Bio

To make your bio do the heavy lifting, it should quickly articulate who you are and why your perspective might be worth following. Here's how to get it right:

  1. Be concise and clear: You only have 160 characters. Use them wisely.

  2. Show your uniqueness: What sets you apart from the rest? Highlight it.

  3. Speak to your target audience: Use the language and terms that resonate with your audience.

My bio answers three questions:

  1. What do I tweet about? (Set the stage for what your reader can expect)

  2. What value can I offer you? (This is the most crucial part)

  3. Why should you trust me? (Build trust by sharing your achievements)

Bonus: The header image reinforces the message and highlights branding and storytelling as my focus areas, both in text and visually.

Pinning the Perfect Tweet

A pinned tweet is like a movie trailer for your Twitter profile. It sets the tone, and if done right, it entices viewers to stay. To pin the perfect tweet, consider these pointers:

  1. Showcase Value: Your pinned tweet should highlight the unique value your Twitter feed offers. It can be a popular tweet, an important announcement, a key insight, or a significant accomplishment.

  2. Call to Action: Consider using your pinned tweet to guide your audience towards an action you want them to take, like signing up for a newsletter.

  3. Update Regularly: Keep your pinned tweet fresh and relevant. Regularly update it to reflect your most recent or valuable content.

My pinned tweet: I chose this thread for several reasons. First, it is a thread, so my visitors instantly know I write threads. Second, my bio says I write about storytelling and branding and share knowledge to “help you succeed.”My thread delivers on this statement.

It is a piece about personally relatable storytelling (“My content used to have zero reach”) and also explores a storytelling framework that readers can use.

Aligning your Bio and Pinned Tweet for Maximum Impact

When your bio and pinned tweet are in harmony, they tell a cohesive story about who you are and what value you provide. So, consistency is key. Ensure your bio and pinned tweet are synchronized and reinforce the same message, brand identity, and value proposition.

With this approach, your Twitter 'CV' is not just about 'what you do' or 'what you say.' It's about 'why you matter' to your followers. This powerful narrative can compel visitors to hit that 'Follow' button and join your journey.
